The Engineering and Maintenance Manager is a hands-on leader responsible for the performance of the engineering, maintenance, and facilities functions. This role not only develops engineering strategic project scopes and actionable plans to support current and future CAPEX investments, but also implements best practices, procedures, and controls in project, maintenance, and facility management such as Installation, Operation qualification, risk management, FAT, preventive maintenance plans, spare parts inventories, CMMS, and work order systems for all plant assets.
This role works very closely with functional leaders and plant employees in Production, Quality, Logistics, Supply Chain, HR, and other support functions during the planning, design, construction, modification, and maintenance of equipment, machinery, and facilities in operations.
Additionally, the position establishes and manages the department’s budget to ensure the financial targets are met or exceeded. It manages all CAPEX and expense projects (i.e- Safety, Quality, Cost Improvements) to meet scope, budget and timelines as defined and agreed with stakeholders.
The leader in this role uses develops and utilizes Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for driving improvements in CAPEX Management and equipment reliability.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
• BS in Chemical, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or a related field of study.
• 7+ years’ experience in manufacturing and/or construction environment.
• 7+ years’ experience in an aseptic and/or powder manufacturing environment preferred.
• 7+ years’ experience with mechanical and electrical systems in a multitude of applications.
• 5+ years’ supervisory or team lead experience in maintenance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Expertise in project planning, resource planning, budget management, milestone generation, risk management, FAT, project assessment and validation, and achieving deadlines.
• Advanced Mechanical and Electrical skills. PLC knowledge is a plus.
• Experience validating aseptic and/or powder manufacturing equipment and processes a plus.
• Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and familiarity with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Ability to transfer technical knowledge to practical applications.
• Ability to lead and manage team members maintaining a high level of morale and discipline.
• Technical expertise in industrial processes, including unit operations, controls, facility infrastructure, equipment reliability, maintenance practices, safety, quality, environmental and utility equipment.
• Ability to lead and manage all aspects of projects, including creation, design, proposal, execution, and review.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• High degree of scientific and technical proficiency.
• Ability to record, report and analyze reliable data.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, be on-call and travel as necessary.
• Must have a “can do” attitude.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position works in a food manufacturing environment and requires the ability to adhere to all GMP, Food Safety, workplace safety, and security policies including wearing required personal protective equipment while meeting GMP standards.
Work must be performed in a safe manner for personal protection and for the protection of other team members.
All safety procedures, procedures described in SOPs, JHAs, and support of the ISO standards in all functional areas must be followed, enforced, and strictly complied with.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• The position requires the ability to perform repetitive motions, lifting up to 50 pounds and on occasion maneuvering drums in excess of 50 pounds with team assistance. The incumbent must be able to stand and walk on concrete floors, bend, reach, push, and pull. Ability to use a computer, telephone, calculator, hand tools, and measuring devices required for the role.
• Management of CAPEX investments to meet the time, cost, and project goals and targets.
• Manages the engineering activities which are to be planned and conducted by the plant engineering department.
• Leads the Maintenance Department in implementing best practices in preventive and work order management.
• Manages departmental budget to ensure budgets are met or exceeded.
• Creates ideas and helps develop and deliver CAPEX plans to support plant expansion and performance to achieve production goals, maintain the quality system, ensure the safety of employees, and protection of the plant assets and the environment.
• Assures team is aligned with plant goals by supporting stable plant operations, seeking continuous improvement, and ensuring training and mentoring of employees.
• Responsible for development of a high productivity workforce by hiring, training, performance evaluation, morale activities, and discipline.
• Adheres to systems for planning, scheduling, implementing, verifying, and closing projects, as developed by engineering department leadership.
• Manages the review of bids and selection process for third party vendors.

• Lead and support facilitation of effective, thorough, prompt execution of root cause analysis, investigation, CAPA and troubleshooting.
• Plan, schedule, execute and/or coordinate the technical resources required for delivering on all potential project ideas.
• In collaboration with Maintenance and equipment supplier defines requirements for new designs, processes, and maintenance schedules.
• Provide input on the planning process for the implementation of new products & manufacturing equipment, and unit operations.
• Tests newly installed machines and equipment to ensure fulfillment of contract specifications.
• Coordinate and manage line installments start-ups and decommissioning events.
• In conjunction with the maintenance personnel and equipment vendors, develop Standard Operating Procedures for equipment operation and parameter settings including preventative maintenance, predictive analysis, and work order scheduling.
• Responsible for the design, development, and execution of engineering projects, calculations, diagrams, technical reports, and regulatory documents.
• Provide technical support and direction when setting monthly, annual or MTP budgets.
• Monitors safety practices of team members and contractors, providing immediate corrective action for unsafe practices if observed, and communicating to team members and management on conditions and concerns involving safety.
• Build and maintain a positive work environment.
• Develops annual goals and objectives for automation staff. Provide quarterly feedback.
• Resolve problems and set deadlines to ensure timely completion of work.
• Maintain integrity and reputation through compliance with state, federal and AJICO guidelines and regulations.
• Maintain ISO 9001, 14001, 45000 and FSSC 22000 status for all control systems documentation.
• Other duties as assigned.
